Most times, they are set up to make other Usenet sites look bad, while making their own the preferred choice of services. Ratings, Awards, Testimonials, etc. all made to help themselves. Sometimes, they are affiliate accounts, again, trying to persuade you to help them make money. Hover over the link and you will usually see an affiliate ID number or name after a ?

They list other Usenet services prices incorrect and much higher than their own.
The retention and completion is said to be worse than it usually is.
Testimonials are shown, again, to improve the chances for choice. Any website can do this
